Player Conduct and Spirit of the Game
All players are expected to play in the spirit of the game by:
- Acting with integrity – for example, by following the Rules, applying all penalties, and being honest in all aspects of play.
- Showing consideration to others – for example, by playing at a prompt pace, looking out for the safety of others, and not distracting the play of another player.
- Taking good care of the course – for example, by replacing divots, smoothing bunkers, repairing ball-marks, and not causing unnecessary damage to the course.
There is no penalty under the Rules for failing to act in this way, except that the Committee may disqualify a player for acting contrary to the spirit of the game if it finds that the player has committed serious misconduct.
Penalties other than disqualification may be imposed for player misconduct only if those penalties are adopted as part of a Code of Conduct.
Rules of Golf
The Rules of Golf are comprehensive and provide answers to the many issues that arise in a game that is played worldwide on many different types of courses by players of all abilities.
Etiquette
This section outlines our expectation of all players, applying equally to our Members and Visitors alike. It specifically sets out to ensure that everyone leaving the course has enjoyed their game.
Pace of play
Play at a good pace. It is a group’s responsibility to keep up with the group in front. If it loses a clear hole and it is delaying the group behind, it should invite the group behind to play through, irrespective of the number of players in that group. Where a group has not lost a clear hole, but it is apparent that the group behind can play faster, it should invite the faster moving group to play through. Always be ready to play as soon as it is your turn. When playing on or near the putting green, leave your bag or cart in such a position as will enable quick movement off the green and towards the next tee. When the play of a hole has been completed, immediately leave the putting green. If you believe a ball may be lost outside a water hazard or is out of bounds play a provisional ball. When searching for a ball should signal the group behind to play through as soon as it becomes apparent that the ball will not easily be found. Do not wait for five minutes before doing so.
Care for the course
Before leaving a bunker, carefully fill up and smooth over all holes and footprints. Leave the rake handle pointing back at the tee where possible, half in and half out of the bunker. Carefully repair all divot holes and any damage to the putting green made by the impact of a ball. On completion of the hole by all players in the group, damage to the putting green caused by golf shoes should be repaired. Do not take divots when taking practice swings or by hitting the head of a club into the ground, whether in anger or for any other reason. Avoid damaging the putting green when putting down bags or the flagstick. Please do not stand too close to the hole and take care during the handling of the flagstick and the removal of a ball from the hole. The head of a club should never be used to remove a ball from the hole.
